SASA PUKL : If you can think about one or two things that you improve it is one step forward.

Marta Seweryn: How do you feel as an instructor at the camp?

As an instructor here I feel very good. Those last passed days have given for sure a lot of experience for the camp but also for me. Like Ronnie repeated few times during the camp: “Everybody is learning, life is process of learning”. Although you come here as an instructor or teacher you also learn something, so it was very attractive camp.

Sasa Pukl: This was exactly my next question; did you also learn something here?

Yes, I have a lot of information from Ronnie. Because I think this camp is excellent opportunity and maybe even the only opportunity in the world, where you can have in one place information from different parts of the world. From two sides of the globe where there is the best basketball – NBA with Ronnie, and from Euroleague. We talk a lot about basketball here, so with exchanging of the information, there were a lot of interesting situations, like the second day we had few examples of how different plays are interpreted in FIBA and in NBA. I think it was fascinating for all of us, I have learnt many new things, how the NBA is teaching referees. Also Ronnie learnt how FIBA is teaching, so particularly the campers have seen the differences.

What would you advice for Kuba, to make camp even better?

He should keep on the good level of basketball at the tournament during the camp. In my opinion this is one of the basics for good level of teaching referees. Because girls or boys around 14 would be not so good to teach. He should keep up level of the games, and maybe this is a good idea to show different rules, different approaches of officiating and we should also remember that the camp is international, so campers should also talk, because it is not only about the observers or teachers, it is also interesting to exchange information with campers, like yesterday after one game I remember we had interesting conversation about how particular play is called in 3 different countries. So it was nice to hear what is going on in the other parts of Europe and even the world because we had referees from Japan.

How did you like lectures of Ronnie Nunn? How was it to work with him at the camp?

He is an excellent guy. This is the first time I met him, personally I watch him many years ago as referee, I saw him at McDonalds tournament in 1993 in Munich. This is many years ago when I saw he is great referee and later I saw many shows that he had in TV, I read some articles, and now I met him, he is a great guy.

A lot time during lectures we compared FIBA rules and NBA rules, is it a good lesson for campers?

Yes, I think it was I would say, for me personally, this was great experience but especially for campers from point of view that they should officiate better in they games probably it was not so much, but with this information they could wider their angle of basketball in their knowledge to understand better the rules, interpretations, mechanics, I think new information can not hurt, it can only help smart referees.

What is your secret about being successful in refereeing?

The formula is A + B + C +… I am joking.:) there is no secret, this is combination of many thing, but behind this there is hard work, you have to physically ready and mentally ready, but from all those fields you have to improve all the time, as I said in the first day for the campers the referee should have certain goals, set them and achieve, without them is more difficult to develop from one season to another. And also this camp is part of getting better from one day to another.

As a referee, where would you wish your career to go? What is your next level?

Well, my next level would be the best games in Europe which I am lucky to be part now, to have interesting good tournament in the summer and develop myself further. Some of my goals are public and some are secret, so let’s keep the rest secret 

Some advices for campers for the next season, please.

For the campers I would say that you have to use the camp to get as many information as possible from the instructors and other campers and then to decide for yourself which are the information that you can use for your carrier. Of course there is a lot of information but you have to select them, you have to know what is good for you, which things can help you in officiating. Like I also say to campers: if you can think about one or two things that you improve it is one step forward.

How looks the summer time of regular, experienced Euroleague referee?

The beginning of the summer will be very busy, because I am leaving the camp one day earlier because I have to go to New Zealand to world championship U19. After I come back I will have full month of nice holiday on Adriatic coast. So this is the time I will not think so much about officiate, I go there to relax, but also make the first step of official preparation to the next season. So I will jog, run a lot, and then in august I have first game before the season, qualifications for the Eurobasket, so I will start my season with the game in France, and then I will see.
