The first of three camps that
Euroleague Basketball is running
this summer for its referees was held
over the weekend in Douai, France. A
total of 10 officials were on hand to
sharpen their skills under the tutelage
of the Euroleague Basketball Technical
Commission, headed by refereeing
supervisor Costas Rigas. The referees at
the camp were drawn from Euroleague
Basketball's own ranks and included
eight others proposed by FIBA Europe to
join the competition. The other members
of the commission are current and former
referees Romualdas Brazauskas, Carl
Jungebrand, Juan Carlos Mitjana and
Goran Radonjic. Upcoming camps will
be held in Croatia and Poland on the
first and third weekends of July,
respectively. "The interest show by
our referees to work and improve in the
offseason is something that can only
enhance our competition," Rigas said at
the conclusion of the camp. "Euroleague
Basketball is committed to the idea that
everyone involved in our competitions
can keep improving professionally just
as our players do from season to
season."
In France over the weekend, the referees
worked live games in a tournament of
under-18 teams from Germany, Bulgaria,
France, Poland, Croatia and Greece that
was organized jointly by the French
Basketball Federation and the Basket
Club de Douai. The scene shifts to
Markarska, Croatian from July 2 to 4,
when four under-20 national teams -
Croatia, Greece, Italy and Turkey - will
be in a tournament sponsored by the
Croatian federation while Euroleague
referees work and analyze the games.
Finally, from July 16 to 18 in
Krakow, Poland, the referees will hold
camp during a tournament of under-18
teams from Spain, Sweden, Slovenia,
France and Poland, whose federation is
organizing the event along with Future
Stars, a London-based organization.
